Gary L. Schauf, 63, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel in San Angelo, Texas. Mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Greenwell officiating. Military burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Gary was born Sept. 30, 1940, in Goddard, Kan., to Floyd and Genevieve Schauf. He attended school in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from Wichita West High School. He received his BS degree from Wayland Baptist University.
Gary retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force where he had worked as a nuclear weapons technician. Following his retirement, he entered Civil Service at Lowry Air Force Base. After base closure, he transferred to Sheppard Air Force Base working in the Technical Training School until his retirement in October 2001. He dedicated 37 years of his life in service to his country. He and his wife, Janice, moved to San Angelo in November 2001.
He was a past commander of American Legion, Post 120 in Wichita Falls. He was also a lifetime member of DAV, TREA, Good Sam and the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI). One of his greatest joys was cooking competition chili for charities across the United States. He also enjoyed playing golf and competition horseshoes.
He was married to the former Janice McClaren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Elizabeth.
